How Many Wallpaper Rolls Do I Need?
The number of rolls you need depends on four things:1. Your room’s wall area — the bigger the room, the more rolls2. Your roll size — US standard rolls cover less area than European rolls3. Doors and windows — these reduce the wall area you need to cover4. Pattern repeat — patterned wallpaper creates waste because you have to match the design across stripsOur calculator handles all four automatically. You just enter the numbers!
What Is a Standard Wallpaper Roll?
In the United States, a standard single roll of wallpaper is 27 inches wide and 27 feet long. After trimming and waste, each roll typically covers around 25 to 30 square feet of usable wall space.European wallpaper rolls are a little different — they’re usually 52 cm wide and 10 meters long. Our calculator works with both sizes, so no matter where you’re shopping, you’ll get the right number.
How to Calculate Wallpaper for a Room — Step by Step
If you ever want to do the math yourself, here is how it works:
Step 1: Measure your room’s perimeter (add all four wall lengths together)
Step 2: Multiply the perimeter by your ceiling height to get total wall areaStep
3: Subtract 21 sq ft for each door and 15 sq ft for each windowStep
4: Divide the remaining area by the coverage per roll
Step 5: Add 10% extra for waste, trimming, and mistakes
For example, a 12×12 room with 9-foot ceilings, one door, and two windows has about 340 square feet of wall area after deductions. With standard US rolls, you’d need around 9 to 10 rolls including the safety buffer.Sounds like a lot of math? That’s exactly why our calculator exists — it does all of this in one click!
Wallpaper Calculator for Every Room
Bedroom Wallpaper:
Most standard bedrooms (10×12 ft) need around 8–10 rolls for all four walls, or just 2–3 rolls for a single accent wall.
Living Room Wallpaper:
Larger living rooms (14×16 ft) typically need 12–16 rolls for full coverage. An accent wall behind the sofa needs only 3–4 rolls.
Kids Room Wallpaper:
A kids room is usually smaller, so 6–8 rolls is often enough. Fun patterned wallpaper is very popular here — our calculator accounts for pattern repeat waste.
Kitchen Wallpaper:
Since kitchens have many cabinets and windows, the actual wall area is smaller. Typically 4–6 rolls is enough for most kitchens.
Pro Tips Before You Buy Wallpaper
Always buy from the same dye lot. Every batch of wallpaper is slightly different in color. The batch number (called a dye lot) is printed on the label. If you run out mid-project and buy more from a different lot, the color may not match exactly. Buy all your rolls at once!, Store your leftover rolls. Keep 1–2 extra rolls after finishing your project. Wallpaper designs get discontinued all the time, and you’ll thank yourself later if you ever need to patch a section. Factor in pattern repeat. A large pattern repeat (18 inches or more) means you waste more paper aligning each strip. Our calculator lets you choose your pattern repeat so the result is accurate. Measure twice, order once. Even a small measuring mistake can mean buying too few rolls. Take measurements two or three times before placing your order. Test a sample first. Always order a wallpaper sample before committing. Colors look different on a screen than they do on your actual walls in your home’s lighting.
